How to Remove Mildew from Bathrooms?

The bathroom has a perfect condition for mildew growth. With warm, wet, humid conditions, it is a 100% chance for mildew to grow. Mildew loves to grow in dark places out of sight. The moment it starts growing and spreading, it can be hard to get rid of. Furthermore, it is not a pleasant thing to have or to see. In other cases, it even causes diseases. For instance, mildew growth causes respiratory diseases such as asthma. You can get rid of mildew growth in many ways. This article gives some tips to follow to eliminate mildew growth from your bathroom.

  • Use of Baking Soda

Using baking soda will help get rid of mildew growth. It is a non-toxic product hence making it safe and easy to use. Baking soda consists of properties that enable it to absorb moisture, making it hard for the mildew to grow. Besides, it also has a drying effect making it the best solution when removing mildew.

To remove the mildew, combine a quarter spoon of baking powder with water in a spray bottle and shake well until the baking powder has dissolved. Spray directly to where the mildew is and use a sponge to clean that area. After that, rinse the area with clean water to remove any residue of the mildew. One more time, spray that area again and leave it to dry. It will ensure the mildew will not grow again.

  • Use of Vinegar

Vinegar is another product used to remove mildew growth from bathrooms. Just like baking soda, vinegar is a non-toxic product that is safe to use.

To get rid of the mildew, pour distilled vinegar into a spray bottle, and spray directly to the affected area. Let the vinegar stay for an hour then wipe the area with clean water and let it dry. Avoid mixing vinegar and water when choosing this method.

  • Use of Borax

Borax is a toxic product. If swallowed, it will have negative effects and can even cause death to a person.  However, regardless of its toxicity, it is different from other chemicals. It does not emit chemicals or dangerous fumes like other products. In addition, borax is affordable and is available in any store at a reasonable price.

To use borax, combine 1 cup of borax with 1 gallon of water. Use a brush to loosen the mildew. As the mildew loosens, wipe the excess mildew with a rag and then allow it to dry. You can leave excess borax on the affected area as it helps get rid of future mildew growth.

  • Use of Hydrogen Peroxide

It is another non-toxic method.  Due to its nature of effervescent fizz, hydrogen peroxide can penetrate through mildew growth. 

To use hydrogen peroxide, pour 3% of hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray it to the mildewed surface. Give it ten minutes to sit on the surface, and then scrub the area until the mildew comes off. After that, wipe the surface to remove any residue left.

  • Use of Tee Tree Oil

Tea tree is an essential oil obtained from natural products. It is harmless to both human beings and pets. It is a better alternative method than using bleach and other toxic products.

To get rid of mildew growth using tea tree oil, combine 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. You then spray the surface and start scrubbing using a sponge or a brush. After that, do not rinse off the solution. Let it stay like that, as it will prevent future growth of the mildew.

  • Humidity Control

The bathroom is one place with a lot of humidity. With a lot of water, less air, and no natural lighting to the bathroom, the higher the humidity levels rise. Humidity enables the growth of mildew. Humidity control is the best and the easiest way to control any type of mildew growth.

Allow fresh air to enter your bathroom. Do not always close the bathroom. It is better to let fresh air in and let out all the humid air. In addition, you can add a ventilator fan to your bathroom. These will allow fresh air in and dry out the mildew.
